PHP is an acronym for Hypertext Preprocessor. What does the first ‘P’ stand for I hear you ask? Yes – I know that’s a little confusing – modern day PHP is actually based on an old set of tools called ‘Personal Home Page’.
PHP is an open source (freely available) scripting language (lines of code) that is run on the server (not directly on your website). Generally speaking PHP is used for the development of web applications (such as websites) and in the case of WordPress websites it is the foundation – the basis – of how this type of dynamic and interactive website works.
The version of PHP that is run on the server and the management of the server are really important aspects of how well your website runs.
